March is that in-between time, when little spring previews are ruthlessly beaten back by just one more snowstorm, when one day you can smell the ground waking up, only to find it sealed with a sheet of ice the next. Take heart, spring really is just around the corner. But there are a few things you can do to bolster your spirits until the weather truly turns.

  1. Surround yourself with spring, indoors. Potted bulbs are available long before the real things start poking up in the garden, as are forced branches and pussywillow branches (a perennial kids' favorite). Try to have a little bit of spring in every room.
  2. Spend an afternoon at a cottage, garden or boat show in your area and start dreaming about the summer.
  3. Adopt a signature cocktail for spring, and share it with friends. Try a Grasshopper (works well on St. Patrick's Day, too), a Rhubarb Cosmo, or a Kentucky Orange Blossom.
  4. Start seeds indoors. This is a great way for frustrated gardeners to get their hands dirty, and an interesting, educational activity for kids.
  5. Get a pedicure. They're not just for girls, and getting rid of your 'winter feet' feels great - even if they'll be hidden for a little longer.
  6. Take down your Christmas lights (and garland, and wreaths, and any other remnants of winter holidays that may be still be hanging around).
  7. Check out the spring and summer fashions in stores now. Buy a new shirt in a fresh spring color.
  8. Keep a pot of scented spring flowers on your desk at all times (daffodils and hyacinths are classics).
  9. As soon as the weather is consistently above freezing, refresh your outdoor planters with pots of spring bulbs.
  10. Paint Easter eggs with or without kids.
  11. Get a jump start on your spring cleaning now. Even if it's too cold to throw the windows open while you're clearing out the winter cobwebs, you'll be ready to get outside as soon as the first warm day hits.
  12. Lighten up, take a break from the winter carbs and focus on fresh fruits and veggies, and slightly smaller portions. By the time summer hits you'll be beach-ready!
